Implications of the Affordable Care Act on Environmental Health (20m Lecture)

Implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act potentially presents far reaching opportunities to improve population health. At the same time, many questions remain unanswered about the emerging risks and benefits associated with the Act. This is particularly true for the practice of environmental health. The ACA gives rise to 1) Accountable Care Organizations, 2) reimbursement of clinical preventive services without cost sharing, and 3) workforce initiatives. The EH profession necessarily needs to be conversant, entrepreneurial and forward-thinking in the new public health paradigm. This presentation will describe the three major ACA areas noted above, and will identify strategies, tactics, and best practices as seen through the lens of the nation's 2800 local health departments. Attendees will benefit from near real time aggregated lessons-learned from the field. Resources and referrals will also be provided.
