This year, the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) again invites YOU to participate in the Abstract selection process for the Annual Educational Conference (AEC) & Exhibition, being held in partnership with the International Federation of Environmental Health. The "Be a Voice" initiative gives you the opportunity to tell us what you'd like to experience at the AEC. Tell us topics you'd like to hear about and speakers you'd like to see. View submitted abstracts and provide feedback on them. Help NEHA develop a training and education experience that continues to advance the proficiency of the environmental health profession AND helps create bottom line improvements for your organization!

Hazard assessment in houses and some clever software tools (50m Learning Lab Hands-On Demonstration)

Purpose and goals: To give environmental health professionals an introduction to the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) and the English approach to its use in enforcement.
To demonstrate software tools to help people using HHSRS and to work out cost savings to the country from remedying individual hazards in homes.
To publicise and distribute an interactive learning tool for property professionals and residents to help them understand what to look for when assessing how safe their home is.

* Participants will have a short presentation on the English Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) and our approach to enforcement using HHSRS. Those unfamiliar with the system can then learn more about how it works, whilst those familiar with the system will get the opportunity to try out a new hazard calculation tool and excess cold assessment tool.
* Participants will be able to play with and ultimately take away a copy of a virtual house, which they can explore and attempt to identify the hazards found inside. This can be put on web-sites etc. to improve awareness of hazards to health in people’s homes.
* Participants will get to try another software tool to show how much money a country can save by taking action to reduce the risk from hazards in their housing stock. This tool works right down to individual hazards and dwellings, showing how much money the country saves from each hazard improved. It also logs savings from users to give the cumulative cost savings from a housing department’s work. The software can be used to make a business case to obtain funds for work to reduce risks to people’s health originating from their housing.
