The "Be a Voice" initiative gives you the opportunity to tell us what you'd like to experience at the AEC. Tell us topics you'd like to hear about and speakers you'd like to see. View submitted abstracts and provide feedback on them. Help NEHA develop a training and education experience that continues to advance the proficiency of the environmental health profession AND helps create bottom line improvements for your organization!

Correcting Corrections (50m Lecture)

Despite legislative oversight and evaluation by local authority, correctional institutions often remain an Environmental Public Health challenge due to outdated rules, lack of understanding, and general malaise regarding institutionalized (incarcerated) persons. The Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act (CRIPA) authorizes the United States Attorney General to conduct investigations and initiate litigation relating to conditions of confinement in state county correctional institutions. Nationwide, litigation brought against many of these facilities, including the Cook County Jail (Illinois), has created an opportunity for Correctional Sanitarians to advance Environmental Public Health programs in a unique environment. This presentation will be an overview of the Environmental Public Health programs and issues as well as tips, ideas and challenges faced when performing Environmental Public Health activities within a detention facility. Topics covered will include Epidemiology, Food Safety, Pest Control, Housing Conditions, Housekeeping, Indoor Air Quality, Fire & Life Safety, Laundry Services, Workplace Safety, HAZCOM, Blood borne Pathogens, as well as some of the challenges encountered.
