This year, the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) again invites YOU to participate in the Abstract selection process for the Annual Educational Conference (AEC) & Exhibition, being held in partnership with the International Federation of Environmental Health. The "Be a Voice" initiative gives you the opportunity to tell us what you'd like to experience at the AEC. Tell us topics you'd like to hear about and speakers you'd like to see. View submitted abstracts and provide feedback on them. Help NEHA develop a training and education experience that continues to advance the proficiency of the environmental health profession AND helps create bottom line improvements for your organization!

Risk assessment of a ferrous and nonferrous metals waste industry (Poster)

In order to balance an economic growth along with the need to protect the environment, a wide range of green jobs emerged, but to ensure that those jobs are truly sustainable one must shore up they are providing healthy and safe working conditions.
This work aimed to know the risk of occupational exposure to physical, chemical and biological agents in a waste management industry of ferrous and non-ferrous.
The noise level that some workers were exposed was above the exposure limit values but with the use of personal protective equipment the noise levels were within the values established by law.
As far as vibrations are concerned, all workers are exposed to a level of vibrations transmitted to the hand-arm system of the lower exposure action value and regarding the level of vibrations transmitted to the whole body, the levels were within established by law. Concerning the assessment of the levels of illuminance, all jobs are within the recommended values, ie, all evaluated jobs have enough lighting .
The level of the chemical or the level of total dust or respirable dust levels, they were all within the exposure limits established by law.
Total concentration of airborne bacteria and fungi were determined as well as the prevalent species that could be identified. The environmental micro flora is mostly composed of fungi although the average counts of viable bacteria are slightly lower.
