This year, the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) again invites YOU to participate in the Abstract selection process for the Annual Educational Conference (AEC) & Exhibition, being held in partnership with the International Federation of Environmental Health. The "Be a Voice" initiative gives you the opportunity to tell us what you'd like to experience at the AEC. Tell us topics you'd like to hear about and speakers you'd like to see. View submitted abstracts and provide feedback on them. Help NEHA develop a training and education experience that continues to advance the proficiency of the environmental health profession AND helps create bottom line improvements for your organization!

Environmental Health Professionals Helping Seniors Age in Place (80m Lecture)

Providing environmental health services to seniors has never been more relevant. The U.S. aging population is growing more rapidly than ever. According to the World Health Organization (2012), “the number of people today aged 60 and over has doubled since 1980” and by 2017 the number of adults aged 65 and over will outnumber preschool aged children. The increasing number of older adults poses challenges to families, communities
and policy makers. Long term care facilities will not be able to support the growing number of seniors. What is more, older adults deserve the quality of life that is most possible by remaining in their homes and communities. As environmental health professionals, we have a unique and important opportunity to assist the growing older adult population live independently in their home of choice. Learn about home environmental health and safety hazards specific to the senior population as well as low cost, non-structural interventions that reduce risk factors. Get an in-depth look at a comprehensive program developed and implemented by environmental health professionals at a local health department. Leave with ideas, resources and information to develop a senior safe living program in your own community.
