In the aftermath of two destructive wildfires and four devastating floods, El Paso County Public Health continues to assist El Paso County, Colorado on the tireless rebuilding efforts. The aftermath of these disasters has left over 900 homes destroyed, and many businesses damaged. From the onset of these disasters the Environmental Health Division has been involved with assisting the Emergency Operation Center on responding to issues surrounding air quality, solid and hazardous waste, water and wastewater, and safe debris removal. Learn how EH assisted with reduction of human suffering and protection of environmental health by:
• Managing the reentry of nearly 60,000 evacuees,

• Surveyed and tested damaged wells and on-site wastewater systems, and
• Built a water distribution station.
After learning that thousands of homes were without power to run wells and many wells were damaged, EH collaborated with a nearby water district to build a water distribution station, following the Black Forest Fire. The water station served as the only nearby water source for hundreds of residents while power was being restored and wells repaired. Also learn how environmental health continues to assist the communities of Manitou Springs, Colorado Springs and Black Forest on rebuilding efforts. These efforts include, evaluating on-site wastewater systems, testing wells, reopening flooded food establishments, managing safe debris removal and assisting at disaster recovery centers.
